Gator Trout Stack Up in the Troughs
We found our trout working the troughs on the incoming tide, and once we got dialed in, the action never let up.
Big gator trout, the kind Tampa Bay anglers dream about, were thick in these deeper cuts as the tide pushed water and bait through. That is a classic pattern for this fishery. As water moves through the troughs on an incoming tide, larger trout position up to feed, and when it is right, it can be lights out.
Our anglers ran into exactly that. We boated eleven oversized trout in a row before finally landing one that fit in the legal slot. That is not a typo. Eleven gators back to back is the kind of stretch that makes for a long, happy day on the water, even with a little extra sorting to find a keeper.
Big female trout like these are a great sign for the health of the Tampa Bay fishery, and catching them, admiring them, and sending them back is part of what keeps this bite so good year after year.
